8th Grade Summer Reading Requirements
As students are reading, they should take notes for each chapter. Name each chapter and write at least four comments per chapter. The notes should not simply be summaries, but should include student's reaction to the characters and the situations, questions, predictions. They should be on looseleaf paper, written legibly and put into a folder with brads.
This will be due the first week of school.
The comments should not be summaries of the chapters but reactions to the events and characters, and predictions of what you think might happen.
For example, if you were reading "Goldilocks and the Three Bears," you might have comments like these:
  • She's very young to be in the woods alone. I wonder what happened to put her in this situation.
  • I would be afraid to enter and walk through a house I wasn't familiar with. She's pretty brave.
  • I would think the Baby Bear's porridge would be the coldest since it's the smallest amount.
  • What will happen if the bears catch her there? I think they will be really upset since she ate their food and broke the baby's chair.

These are some simple examples of what students should be doing as they read, not after they have finished the chapter or book.
